Shauna and Jay Elrod: We are a blended-schooling family, meaning one of our children attends public school and the other two are homeschooled. We’ve homeschooled since 1998. We decided to homeschool for various reasons. We were both very bored public school students (hailing from Union and Jenks/Broken Arrow) and have so far been successful at providing a better education than what our kids would (and do) get at school. The only actual curriculum material we’ve ever bought was Saxon Math 1; and it didn’t work for us. “School at home” doesn’t work for us, and that’s admittedly a difficult hurdle when public school is “all you know”. We utilize the internet, various workbooks (though I’m pretty picky about those), the library, the Core Knowledge series of books, and the OK PASS guidelines to “direct” (for lack of a better word) our homeschooling. The most important thing I’ve learned through homeschooling our kids is that we have to be flexible, which goes for parenting in general, IMHO. Our kids are constantly growing and changing, and we have to adapt to them just as much as they have to adapt to us (if not more so). We’ve had years where we were very organized and we’ve had years where no amount of organization could help us be any more “productive” than we already were. Sometimes we have to just throw out what isn’t working (even if it’s everything we’ve been trying to do) and start fresh – and the library is an excellent place to do that. I’m a believer in the philosophy that your kids will learn what they need to learn through what they want to learn, and our first job as parent-teachers is to challenge them and introduce them to a variety of things so the sparks can ignite. Feel free to email us at acemom98@yahoo.com if we can be of help.

Garethe and Janecee Suarezy: 8 years ago the government (aka public) schools were not meeting the needs of our kids. One was 2 years behind in math and reading and the other one was fighting depression and constant verbal abuse. We knew that we could do better than that at home. So we did. The older two have since graduated, and now we have a 6 year old boy (7 in May!) and a 10 year old girl who have never been anything but homeschooled. We believe that the children we have already graduated are better educated and just as importantly, better people, than if we had not brought them home. We use eclectic methods including, but not limited to, the Core Knowledge series, workbooks, printed worksheets, discussion, educational television, life experiences and outside private classes. We use the PASS guidelines as a tool to help us better direct our children’s education. We are some of the original founders of SCENE and run the website, moderate the e-list, and plan monthly meetings. When you click the button above, one of us will be answering your e-mail! If you read one of the other families bios below and feel more comfortable with them, please feel free to e-mail them instead.
